Detoxify Your Skin

Everyone wants clear and vibrant looking skin, yet many people struggle with the health of their skin each year.  Patients come to my office saying they’ve tried creams, steroids, medications and every skin treatment their dermatologist and spa can offer, and nothing ever helps.  From all the cases that I have handled which includes teenage and adult acne, dry/wrinkly skin, infections, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis and rosacea I often include a class of herbs called depuratives into their treatment plan.

I use depuratives with patients with skin issues because they help detoxify and remove metabolic waste from the skin and prevent wastes from accumulating to initial a healing process.  There are many herbs that have depurative function and we are fortunate to have access to products that combine each of these herbs in a dosage that produces the therapeutic effect.

Some of these herbs that we use are Arctium lappa, Berberis aquifolium, Fumaria officinalis, Galium aparine, Smilax ornata, Rumex crispus, and Trifolium pratense.

However, it isn’t as easy as just placing someone on a group of depuratives and seeing the symptoms go away.  Your skin reflects the health inside you.  I make sure the patient understands that our goal is to find what is causing the redness, inflammation, dryness, itching, or whatever their symptoms are so that the problem is knocked out for good.  We evaluate every organ, gland and tissue in the body as a possible source of the problem, so the right treatment can be rendered which is why support for the liver, kidneys, and digestive system is incorporated depending on the individual.  In addition, we look at past and current blood work, lifestyle habits, what they come in contact with on a daily basis, where they travel/traveled, etc.

When explaining to a patient why they get short lived or no results at all with traditional treatments is because you can’t fix an internal problem with only external solutions.  The healing must be supported from within.  Using anti-inflammatories, topical creams and “state of the art” treatments is the equivalent of using a fire extinguisher and aiming it at the smoke instead of the flame and wondering why the fire still rages.

To sum it up our goal is to remove the source of symptoms and then support a healthy repair and recovery process in the skin.
